Setting Up the Board Work
Place the empty board in front of you with the first rank closest to you.
Introduce Ranks and Files. There are 8 Ranks number 1 through 8. There are 8 Files lettered a through h. (Point and say each letter and number while running your finger along the length of the ranks and files.)
I have the first rank closest to me. There is a light square in the lower right corner.
Put all the white chess pieces on one side of the board and all the black pieces on the other. Keep the pawns and major pieces separate.
Then start placing the pieces on the board. White king on e1, black king on e8. White queen on d1, a light colored square. Black king on d8, a dark colored square. White bishops on c1 and f1. Black bishops on c8 and f8. White knights on b1 and g1. Black knights on b8 and g8. Place the rooks in the four corners with white rooks on a1 and h1 and black rooks on a8 and h8.
Put the white pawns on the second rank, in front of the white pieces to protect them, saying a pawn, b pawn, c pawn and so on.
Put the black pawns on the seventh rank to protect them, again naming the pawn by its letter name from a through h.
The board set up work is complete.
