It teaches chess pattern recognition, and sequential capture of pieces to leave a single chessman on the board. This game develops the ability to efficiently capture your opponent's chessmen to arrive at a beneficial position in the game. Additionally it develops awareness of how your own pieces protect and support each other.
Advanced chess players can solve these puzzles quickly and easily having learned the skills that this variation teaches in the course of improving their chess game. Beginning players can use the game to bolster their skills.
Solitaire Chess is self correcting and played on a smaller board without the level of intimidation and pressure of winning and losing which beginners may experience when first learning to play chess.
In Solitaire Chess, as in regular chess, pawns only move and capture in a forward direction. When a king is on the board, it will always be the last piece standing.
